Hindus in northeast state of Mizoram thanked the majority Christians for being able to observe Durga Puja peacefully, amid the communal clash against Christians in states of Orissa and Karnataka.

P Chakraborty, President of the Aizawl–based Hindustan Club said that the Hindu community received warm wishes and goodwill from the Mizos during the Puja, which shows that people of all faiths in the state are maintaining harmonious co–existence.

Chakraborty, who is also the state Law Secretary, added, "on the occasion of the puja, we the Hindu community here are greeting the peace–loving Mizos for their hospitality."

Expressing gratitude towards the Christians in the state, Chakraborty further said, "We as Hindus condemn the attacks on Christians in Orissa and other states."

Some 87% of the Mizo population (including all ethnic Mizos) belongs to the Christian community. The state ranks first in India with a literacy rate of 91.1%.
